About Our Gastropub

"A gastropub" is a place where people can order tasty, reasonably priced food and good beer and liquor to go with it. The atmosphere is always comforting and unpretentious. The name gastropub suggests community. The gastropub movement started in the early 90’s in London, England. The idea of taking an existing pub, injecting a gourmet chef, and elevating the experience for its patrons crossed the pond and has been permeating this country for a few years now.

Twiggs is the first gastropub in St. Albans and our mission is to provide high quality, freshly prepared food at reasonable prices, maintaining purveyors of local or organic produce, sustainable seafood, and humanely raised meat and poultry as often as possible.

Twiggs Gastropub also goes further to provide a unique selection of beer, wine, and cocktails to enjoy alongside the food. Twiggs Gastropub carries a vast selection of wines by the glass and by the bottle. Boutique wineries are sought out, to give the guests a chance to indulge in something they may have never tried before. While you may recognize a few wineries by name, you will notice even more that you’ve probably never heard of. The team at Twiggs Gastropub has painstakingly gone through many wine tastings to find these gems.

On the cocktail side, we have many unique offerings as well. Recipes developed by Twigg’s own, grace the bartop throughout the evening to create delicious cocktails in order to help elevate your experience.

Gastronomy is the art or science of food eating.

A Gastronomical Education

Gastronomy is the study of relationship between culture and food. It is often erroneously thought that the term is synonymous with the culinary arts, but in fact this is only a small part of this discipline. Gastronomy is interdisciplinary, related to the fine arts, social sciences, and natural sciences.

A gastropub is a British term for a public house ("pub") which specializes in high-quality food a step above the more basic "pub grub." The name is derived from gastronomy and was coined in 1991 when David Eyre and Mike Belben opened a pub called The Eagle in Clerkenwell, London. They placed an emphasis on the quality of food served, though The Eagle was not the first pub to offer good food. Gastropubs usually have an atmosphere which is relaxed and a focus on offering a particular cuisine prepared as well as it is in the best restaurants. Staying true to the format requires a menu that complements the assortment of beers and wines the gastropub offers.
